All Aboard the Trade Show Express

We have all experienced it. That moment where you are at a trade show just trying to mind your own business and attend the event. Inevitably there is a free lunch and after a four-hour speaking session, and another bag jam-packed with pens and various objects that you hope include snacks, the session wraps up and you are on a one-way ticket aboard the speed train heading straight to the buffet. Then you see it- a plethora of booths and individuals who seem to be looking straight into your soul in hopes of trying to take your time to discuss their business and sell their various products or services.

You immediately look down in an effort to avoid their glare. Trying not to make eye contact, but aware enough of your surroundings to not knock down one of the booths. Finally, you make it to the buffet. You grab your utensils and sit down to eat, rarely thinking of the services, products, and knowledge that you passed by and the impact they could have made on your business.

This was your first mistake, and was once mine. Fear not! There is another opportunity train we can board together.

There is such strength and prospect in conversation amongst individuals in a like field. Oftentimes I've found the building blocks to meaningful business partnerships and knowledge are found at these very events. We've become a generation that connects willingly electronically, but are reluctant to approach the everyday opportunity that presents itself in person. Trade shows generate more than 12.6 billion dollars in revenue. The power lies with those who communicate clearly, often, in various ways, and with a full understanding of their business.

So the next time you attend a trade show, break away from your comfort zone and take a chance to talk to some prospective partners or customers. Who knows? It could be your ticket to the top!
