  • Google Cloud: Carbon-neutral since 2007, with data centers using 50% less energy than typical centers. 
  • Microsoft Azure: Aiming to be carbon-negative by 2030, with investments in renewable energy and AI-powered sustainability tools. 

 

Strategies for Reducing Your Business’ Carbon Footprint 

Not ready to migrate to a green data center? You can take several positive steps today to help deliver on your commitment to sustainability while supporting hybrid, remote, and return-to-the-office work models by changing business operations to improve energy efficiency.  

Here are some steps you can take to help achieve environmental sustainability, lower your carbon footprint, and reduce energy consumption for your business. 

  • Give employees the option to turn off their video during your company meetings.  
  • Set data storage limits for all employees when using cloud-based depositories. 
  • Set retention policies for all email and data to help reduce cloud storage. 

Note: Setting storage limits also helps reduce junk emails. 

  • Before any digital transformation initiative, make sure that all data centers are certified as LEED buildings. "LEED Certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social, and governance benefits." 
  • Provide monthly payments for employees using public transportation and/or encourage employees to purchase electric vehicles through an employee benefit program.  
  • Migrate all company-owned vehicles to electric. 
  • Install EV chargers in your office parking lots. 
  • Reduce unnecessary business travel, including air travel and personal vehicle usage. Note: This step positively affects reducing the global carbon footprint. 

Suggestions from Microsoft:  

  • Switch to renewable energy like solar, hydro, geothermal, and wind to reduce your environmental footprint. Microsoft’s projections show that 50 percent of total power generation after 2035 will be from renewables—primarily wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources.  
  • Commit to a Zero-Waste Future by increasing the use of recycled content and responsibly sourcing materials for operations, products, and packaging.  
  • Reduce Your business’ carbon emissions by using innovative environmental sustainability solutions that allow you to measure, record, and report carbon emissions across your supply chain. This allows you to identify areas for improvement, gain efficiency, and make lasting changes to reduce your overall impact.  
  • Conserve water by adopting water-saving technologies and practices within your business. 
  • Advocate for sustainability policies that support environmental causes like pushing for regulations that are designed to reduce carbon emissions, advance zero-carbon energy, manage ecosystems effectively, and increase water access, availability, and quality.
