Have you ever internally debated about when to contact your IT consultant for support and advice? We believe in Richard P. Feynman’s understanding that “No problem is too small or too trivial if we can really do something about it.” We think this mindset has direct relevance in our work. Let’s see how!
Let me describe you for a moment. You’re the type of person who’s respectful. You don’t like pinging a co-worker for the same thing you just asked about not five minutes prior. You like being conscientious of people’s time. Thus, you’d never circle back and ask for the same thing five times over! Four is your absolute limit. Besides, you…. think you can figure it out. You’ve got this. You’re going to figure out how to get by this IT issue all by yourself because you paid attention the four times before. Heh. Right!
So many things to consider; By now you you’ve thought of trying to pull this off without IT’s help. You know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this isn’t the best idea. You’re afraid you might even trigger an alert and then they’ve realized you’re tinkering. Ugh – and then they will reach out to you. What does that make the official count for the day now? Five. Five IT calls today with the potential for a sixth? No, you don’t want that embarrassment. You’re not trying to tell them you think you’re smarter than they are. You’re also too considerate to bother them again. But you really, really need this issue fixed that you broke. Again. And you know it’s a small fix, but you just don’t want to bother anyone. You’re so considerate. So, you’re going to think it over…AGAIN.
Troubleshooting IT problems just isn’t your thing. “But why is that”, you ask? It’s because most make their issue worse, and then end up having to apologize because they didn’t ask for help. In my experience, you just can’t go it alone. You don’t have the knowledge that the savvy, nerdy IT professional has, and is a simple e-mail or phone call away. Sure, they’ve helped you a half-a-dozen times already today and you don’t want to make them mad. But your experience tells you that if you try to fix this on your own, you’ll just end up making matters worse. So, what should you do? Did I mention you’d have to fight traffic to get in early on Monday to finish this report by 8:30 a.m.? Has the balancing scale tipped yet?
You’ve always wanted that IT professionals I’m going to tell you about; The one who lives by some [core values] that help them stand out from the rest of the condescending ones you dread dealing with. The one with the patience of a saint, but the charisma of a Hollywood star. Let’s be honest, you have yet to find a personable IT professional who is polite enough to ask you about your day, or not to breathe into the mic during a ten-minute software install. This ideal IT guru isn’t going to make a remark about how often you’ve asked for help. Nor is he going to tell you, “Hey can I get to that later”? They won’t hand you off or tell you your request isn’t a problem, oh, and I’m busy. No, you want support with no unprofessional strings attached. Hi, my name is Steve and I’m your IT Support guy! And I believe that there is no IT Issue Too Small for you to come to me for the sixth time on the same day. Why? Because I’m here to help and support you and I do it all without reservation. No judgment, no prejudice. All, because I know what you’re thinking, and I know you need service without the obstacle of your own self-righteousness’ and my opinion. You deserve that.
You’ve found someone who absolutely loves what they do. But how does someone love supporting people after being tapped on the shoulder for a record x-number of times in the same day? The simple answer is am passionate about it. I understand you have stuff to get done. I understand there is an entire process flow behind your work. I don’t mind that you need help as I’m here to help you do your job. And because you know that about me, you’re not worried about what I think with the fact that our magic number, as you read on and on, is six for today. Oh, and for the record, let’s say you choose iuvo Technologies and end up pinging me for the same thing over and over and over. You wouldn’t come close to the record or even be testing my patience. I’m all about deliverables, deadlines and I love getting things done!
